Viola Davis Attributes Natural Hair to Feeling 'Powerful'

With the meteoric success of The Help, Viola Davis has racked up one accolade after another this awards season. She's been jetting from red carpet to red carpet in gorgeous gowns and glamourous gems -- but yesterday, at ESSENCE's Black Women in Hollywood event, we saw a side of the actress we've rarely seen before. That's because Davis fearlessly flaunted her cropped, natural coif.

When asked if she breaks out her natural hair for special occasions, Davis replied, "No, there hasn't been any occasion that I felt brave enough to do it."

Davis attributed her bravery to wear her natural 'do to the encouragement of her loving husband Julius Tennon, who "told me to step into who I am," she said.

The Best Actress Oscar nominee also confessed that her natural hair has given her a thrilling new feeling.

"I feel very powerful, I really do," said Davis. "I feel more powerful every day, more secure in who I am, and I've waited so long for that.... It feels so divine."
